West Virginia fans take a lot grief for their actions and their t-shirts from the rest of the country. And rightfully so. We have "allegedly" dropped trash cans on opposing coaches, taken a number two in the opposing bands seats, burned couches, and drink too much. And yeah, the t-shirt. You can have one hand delivered to your tailgate if you keep your eyes open. But word out of Piscataway is that the Rutgers student section was being a little more than rough on the Navy football team and fans last Friday night. Even though all the bad words are dashed out, I'm still don't think it's something I want to reprint. But the general feeling of those present goes something like this.
"This is how you treat people who may die for this country?" said Bill Squires, an Annapolis graduate (Class of'75) who was on the sidelines for the Friday night game in Piscataway and was shocked by the obscene chants directed at the Navy players and fans throughout the game. "It was the most classless thing I've seen."Maybe it's just because today is 9/11 and the emotions are running a little high, but if there was ever a team that you shouldn't be disrespectful to, this is it. Well, all the service academies probably deserve to be treated a little different. There are certain games on everyone's schedule that you know things like this are going to happen. Pitt-West Virginia, Michigan-Ohio St., etc. I'm not saying it's right, but you know from experience that the bad blood will never go away. So you bring your ear muffs, or you stay at home and watch. But what did Navy do to anyone?
Navy was booed and peppered with "You suck!" chants when they stepped on the field for both halves. Toward the end of the second half, Rutgers students in the new bleacher section began to serenade the adjacent section of Navy fans and uniformed Midshipmen.

Oh come on. It's a suddenly good football team in central Jersey. What did you expect? Call it the "Philadelphia Effect". The douchebags make every sporting event intolerable - I'm an Eagles fan and I wouldn't go cheer my own team there.
The "But.. we're Navy" whining is lame, though. Fans are fans, and trash talk happens. It's dishonest to imply that by razzing the Midshipmen's fans, they're disrespecting the service of the Navy. They'll be just as horrible to the next team, I'm sure.

Perhaps Rutgers can play Maryland, and they can serenade each other with 'You Suck". That's what Maryland "fans" did the last time they played Navy. The weird thing is that these "fans" will actually get a college degree. What that tells me is that college degrees ain't what they used to be...

Don,
You should travel to Annapolis (or West Point) sometimes for a football game. You will experience an atmosphere of sportsmanship that is second to none these days. The home team fans do not act up and they are a cut above the trash that goes to Rutgers and Maryland. By the way, Navy played Temple at Philadelphia and the fans were much, much more respectful. Perhaps they can teach the Eagles' fans how to behave. LOL

Oh wow..another comment about sleeping with a sister... if you're gonna talk smack at least come up with some NEW material... that stuff is way too old.
This poor guy is so pathetic that even his sister wouldn't want him.
As for the Navy comments... i don't believe its "whining".. if ANYone deserves respect it IS these gentlemen(and ladies although not football players).. their season consists of football and then back to defending our great country and its people (yeah.. even the jerkwad in the aforementioned). You can cheer on your team and even diss another team without "disrespecting" them.

Nice Randall. I am pretty sure that Rutgers will enjoy building on their ONE history year this year and in the future...LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. I am sure your team is doing very well this year and has done so for the past decade and/or century. Congratulations idiot!!!!
As for the game. I was there directly across the field from where the Navy fans sat. I didn't notice any of the vulgarities directed at the Navy section. That is not to say that it didn't happen, because it seems that it did. What I am getting at is I don't think it was a large group of people chanting or it would have been more noticeable. As for the booing, it happens at every game when the visitors come out on the field. I don't think people dissected who the opponent was and what type of service they do for the country. Had they done so, their actions would have been different.
For those with the potty mouths, shame on you...but let's not think they represent the majority at Rutgers football games. As for the booing, I think it was a knee jerk reaction and a mistake. But don't delve too deeply into the meaning of the booing. I am sure the Rutgers faithful meant no malice towards the Naval Academy.

I can't believe Navy players would want to think that fans should treat them differently than any other visiting team. Everyone knows it's a sign of respect when fans go to lengths to boo, taunt, and intimidate them. So a few drunks 19 year olds yelled the "f" word....it's a football game! Get over it!

For a perfect display of sportsmanship, watch the post-game traditions of the Army-Navy game. That kind of class - by both institutions - would bring a tear to your eye!

I am sick of the "get over it" comments when under age drinking and throwing the "F" bomb around is something we have to get over. What needs to happen is that schools need to understand that it is their responsibility to create an atmosphere where all people (including little children) can go to enjoy college sports. It's disgusting really, and our society will pay the price for this.
