Quick, name the only teams from the state of North Carolina with wins over 1-A teams. Yes, Appalachian State is one of them, but the other team is East Carolina.
Duke, Wake Forest and NC State are all 0-2. UNC beat 1-AA James Madison last week. Tonight East Carolina knocked off UNC 34-31 with a 39-yard field goal as the clock expired. Kicker Ben Hartman had gone an abysmal 1-4 -- missing kicks of 30, 32 and 37 yards. Then he hits the game-winner for the obligatory redemption storyline.
The final drive for East Carolina appeared to be aided by UNC Head Coach Butch Davis forgetting he wasn't still in the NFL as he had the defense drop into a prevent. East Carolina took advantage and moved from the UNC 47 to the 21 in the final 51 seconds.
A huge win for East Carolina as they notch their second win all-time against UNC. Their first win against UNC since 1975. Greenville will be a good place to be tonight.

Don't be so quick to anoint Appalachian State the best team in the state of North Carolina; it's only the second week of the season. After Michigan got spanked 39-7 at home by Oregon, maybe ASU's win wasn't as much to do with ASU as it was to do with Michigan.
Obviously, we won't know who the best team in the state of North Carolina is, because Appalachian doesn't play NC State, UNC, East Carolina, Duke, or Wake Forest this year. They did lose 23-10 to an NC State team that won only three games last year; a State team who lost to UNC, ECU, and Wake Forest later in the season. So far this year Wake Forest has lost two close games to two top-25 teams, and East Carolina beat UNC and played Virginia Tech close until the last few minutes of the game.
So don't be so sure that Appalachian is the best team in the state... at least not just yet.

One point your have continually left out about ASU is that they are not only the National Champions I-A (Now called Something else) but they are the two time back to back national champions, which was history in the making also. I don't think ECU has accomplished a similiar feat in its program. ASU has earned and deserves the respect it is receiving. When ECU can accomplish back to back national championships, come talk to me.

ecu is the best team in NC. ASU beat a bad Michigian and ASU plays in a sub divison they only play one D1a team while ecu plays one each week
