As everyone in the college football world knows, Boise State tailback Ian Johnson is getting married to Broncos cheerleader Chrissy Popadics. He proposed to her on national television immediately after helping defeat Oklahoma in a much-celebrated David over Goliath slaying.Although Johnson is rarely seen doing anything but smiling and winning, this kind of, totally, sucks:
Johnson said he's received phone calls, 30 letters and, in some instances, personal threats from people who objected to his plans to marry Popadics.Johnson is now under some form of protection to ensure nothing crazy goes on at his wedding. Hopefully everything goes off without a hitch and Johnson keeps on smiling and scoring touchdowns while officially starting a new wife with the soon-to-be Mrs. Johnson.
"You take it for what it is -- the less educated, the less willing to change," Johnson told the Statesman. "But we're not acting like we're naive to all the stuff that's going on. We know what's been said. We're going to make sure we're safe at all times. It's an amazing day for us, and we'd hate to have it ruined by someone."

Just because people see him propose on TV they think it's their business to tell him what they think? It's unfortunate that in this day in age racism is still prevalent like this. I thought that was the funniest/coolest thing ever when he proposed after the win!

Very sad. Ian Johnson is one of the classiest guys around college football and exemplifies the student athlete mold. Saw him speak on the new ESPN show the other day and couldn't help being impressed. Hope everything goes well for him and his wife to be.

Yeah, I've noticed how well-spoken and intelligent Johnson seems. The ironic thing here is that the idiots threatening him are probably about 1/5 as smart and capable as this guy.

Sound's like some of the vile nasty race hatred that Lou Dobbs and his followers preach.

People should just be able to be happy and live their lives. I don't know why it's so necessary that miserable people have to ruin it for others. I know that Mr. Johnson is seen as an "exceptional human being", and that is one of the reasons that he has so many supporters, but if he was just the "average joe", he should be able to fall in love, propose, get married, and live his life.

I'm leery of pretending like it's only one or two people who kook out over race. It is quite a few people--THAT's why it's so scary...
I only mention it because it seems like whenever we hear of something like this, there's an impulse to write it off as isolated or as an aberration, and that denial can be scary too.

You make an interesting point, marisa. That same PATHOLOGICAL weirdness is why the FBI has had to shadow innocent, brilliant Tiger Woods! And why evil wackos besmirch his perfectly decent Swedish wife. Her mother was a high-ranking government official in Sweden and her father a well-respected broadcast journalist when she met Tiger. The bizarre LIES told about that innocent young lady after she married wonderful Tiger were downright demonic . I hope Ian and his bride-to-be are ecstatically happy for many decades and may all their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and beyond be spiritually-devout, beautiful, and intelligent!

Racism and hateful prejudice are still ALIVE AND WELL, sadly in this nation. It will take many more years for it to be gone. Definitely does NOT bode well for Barack Obama, who had to get Secret Service protection because of racial death threats.

Oh My goodness, what century and planet are we on? Leave those people alone!!! With all that is more important going on in the world, there are a select few who choose to take one good thing and try to ruin it for others. Doesn't anyone believe in happiness anymore? I am very happy for that young couple and all that life has to offer them. My husband and I are a mixed couple and we couldn't be happier!!! We have a very strong friendship as well as marriage and expecting our first baby any day now. And as far as what race she will be? Does it really matter? As long as she's loved and turns out to be an outstanding human being, that's all we ask for. Again, Congrats Ian and Chrissy!!!!!

Um, hello? Different races is not the same as different species, human beings are all one species, that's why we can mate with just about any human being on the planet and not end up sterile, like a horse and a donkey producing a sterile mule. It's not the same. And people who are against his marriage and are prejudice are usually uneducated low-class hillbillies, such as that lowly human being that posted that stupid comment about species. Only dumb asses would do that.

A species is often defined as a group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring.(Wikipedia) The human race is a species although divided into races. A dog and cat are of different species and will not mate naturally. Let me point out that a black dog will mate with a white dog. A poodle will mate with a Lab because they are of the same species although different breed(race)of dog. BTW....OJ didn't murder his wife and her friend because he is black and they were white. He did it because he is a killer!
I wish the newly married couple success in the future. It's wonderful to see love and happiness prevail and I hope they are able to repel the negativity of others. What really matters is how they feel toward each other not what others think. They may not be able to change the world but they can make THEIR WORLD a loving and accepting place. Congratulations Ian and Chrissy!

Ian is a very bright person. He's a hard worker, he worked for me just before he went off to college. He's very polite and fun to be with. No one has the right to tell them who he can or cannot marry. Those people should be found and service time. Good luck u 2 in every thing you do and have a very happy life.

Yes, what day and century do we live in? What makes you think he's BLACK? Why is it that biracial sportsmen say they are Black? hm? Ashamed to be white also? I'm not convinced that Ian is a "good guy". To everyone on here: Just keep saying those things that sound good and blaming Lou, Fox, and the Sooners for all the "racism" and tell me who the real cowards are. I'm starting to think that Boise State shouldn't have gotten a BCS bid simply because their coach, football team, and fans can't seem to digest the minus side of national coverage.

I'm sure Dobbs is wringing his hands with worry saying to himself, "Oh, I'd better go back quickly and change my stand against illegal immigration or else people will think I'm against Johnson's and Chrissy's marriage..."
Am I the only one who thinks this line of reasoning is a bit...um...naive?
As for interracial marriages, I had one. My wife was unfaithful. That was seven years ago. I'm getting married again in December. Guess what. It will be an interracial marriage again. Why? Do I hate white women? No. It's just that the woman God blessed me with happens to be Chinese.
So, Johnson and Chrissy, God bless you and your marriage and may you have the greatest marriage ever!!!

I have been a huge Sooner fan all my life and hold my bachelor degree from OU. I am very happy to see the wedding of this happy couple and truly wish them all the best. Isn't that what nice people are supposed to wish for others?
Good game, Boise.

To tim on 07/27: What a stupid comment! Don't put your hangups on someone else...just because you would never think of marrying someone else of a different skin tone as yourself doesn't mean everyone is THAT ignorant! I'll bet you sit in a tub of bleach every day and slather yourself from head to toe in sunblock and then cover up from head to toe so that your skin will never get a shade darker! As to your utterly dumb statement about what race their baby would be...why it would be of the human race! You need to take your sheets and go to a nice hot place.

One of the best games I've ever seen, combined with the greatest moment ever in sports. Ian proposing after that winning touchdown was the best live moment I've ever seen. I will have signs supporting and congratulating Ian and Crissy when they visit Fort Collins to battle CSU.
