Not according to one writer. The Los Angeles Times' Christine Daniels lists the region's most popular sports teams and the Trojans come out third behind the Dodgers and the Lakers. Having lived in Los Angeles, I can definitely give the nod to the Dodgers here. Their appeal is universal and both Dodger Stadium and Vin Scully are public institutions.
UCLA's football program comes in fifth, behind UCLA basketball.
Interesting did-you-know: the late Lakers broadcast legend Chick Hearn used to be an announcer for USC football games. He eventually settled with the Lakers and became an institution of his own with all the quirky phrases he invented such as slam dunk and "this game's in the refrigerator: the door is closed, the lights are out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard and the Jell-O's jigglin"

They may not own LA but they're certainly a big reason no one in LA is in a rush to get a pro football team.
And let's face it, LA loves a winner. So if the Lakers, Dodgers, Trojans or Bruins are winning, they're the favorite team du jour.

The people of Los Angeles could care less about a pro football team.
The only people who want one are:
1)City Council
2)The various parties of the Coliseum Commission
3)The NFL
It's really an embarrassment at this point. If the powers that be would let the NFL dream go, USC could negotiate to fix up the Coliseum and make it a more permanent home, the NFL could stop using Los Angeles as a pawn for poorly run franchises looking for a move and the Los Angeles sports scene would be all the better for it.

How one determines the most 'popular' sport in Los Angeles must be a subjective matter as there is no other sports program that even comes close to drawing more spectators per game than USC.
To Brian, the reader who commented about the Dodgers have the best home attendance record, it is interesting to note that in each of the past 5 seasons, the Yankees have had a greater home attendance than the Dodgers.
It should be noted that Chick Hearn not only broadcast USC basketball games, but also USC football.
