Last Year: 11-2 (6-2 SEC)Fans Are: Excited for another season, although probably a bit over-optimistic and unaware that LSU is not on the way up any more, even if they haven't started their descent.
Expectations: The Tigers will probably end up having a pretty good season. Four of their five away games are going to be walks in the park, and the fifth, at Tuscaloosa, the Tigers should have no problem getting tooled up for, given the breathless ranting about how Saban somehow screwed LSU by going to Alabama.
Questions:
1. Russell, Bowe, and David are gone... who fills those big shoes?
The QB race has been interesting this spring. Coach Miles doesn't seem to have made a decision yet as to who he thinks will start in the season opener. Flynn has done well in Spring practices and most seem to agree that he's got an early lead on Perrilloux. Flynn, however, is no Russell, but neither is Perrilloux so how things will go in the Post-Russell Era is still up in the air. As for fill-ins at wide receiver, Doucet is the only stand out so far and that could pose some problems as LSU hits the meat of the SEC schedule which is thick with secondaries capable of locking down single-receiver passing offenses. That, coupled with Les Miles' near psychotic obsession with running the ball, could cause some offensive difficulties this year.
2. Of the stable of tailbacks, who gets the starting nod in late August?
Last year's starter, Keiland Williams, is back again. Competing for his starting job, though, are Charles Scott, Jacob Hester, and a redshirt from last year Richard Murphy. Going out on a limb, here, I wouldn't be surprised to see Hester snatch that starting spot from Williams by the time the Tigers head to Starkville. As far as success goes, LSU lost a few big guys up front, so it'll be interesting to see how the fill-ins do. The O-Line looks good down the road, though, as Miles and company did a good job recruiting at those positions.
3. Speaking of Les Miles... why isn't he getting the respect he deserves around the SEC?
Outside of LSU Fans, most of whom have been made True Believers, there's a notion that Les Miles is publishing someone else's ghost-written novel. For the past few seasons he's been coaching Saban's players with Saban's coaching staff, and generally having a pretty good run at it. Some would say, however, that a wet paper bag could've gotten the same results. The most cynical of the critics don't even credit the fairly successful recruiting classes to Miles. This season will go a long way toward earning Miles a reputation among the elite coaches in the SEC or, if things fall apart, confirming the suspicions of the critics that Miles is sitting in front of a player piano and pretending to be a virtuoso. That all said, you can expect this year to be a little more difficult than last year, but the self-destruction that most of Miles' harshest critics have been calling for simply won't materialize.

Some Thoughts on your Post:
- I would rather the fans be optimistic rather than pessimistic. I wouldn't say it is on the descent yet. Saban had a better record than Miles for just one year. Let's give him chance to mess up another really good opportunity this year first!
- I don't see Hester beating out Williams, Murphy, Scott, and Broussard for the most carries this year.. He may continue to be a good utility back, but one of the others will rise up to take the lead. I am leaning towards Murphy from what I am hearing.
-In my estimation, Miles came in wide-eyed and had to grown up on the job. Coaching a big time program takes some gumption. He still has to win the games that are toss ups and learn how to coach on gameday. Losing the opening SEC game the last two years cannot be repeated. We shall see!!

First of all, LSU fans (at least the ones I know) will always be optimistic about the upcoming season this time of year. It doesn't matter if we went 2-10 last season, we will always expect to win a national championship...nothing wrong with that. I disagree with the fact, however, that LSU is on the decline. If this is what you truly believe, then I truly believe that we will surprise you this year. I think that expected starter Matt Flynn will be a more than capable replacement. Now I'm gonna bring you back to the 2003 LSU national championship season. We had virtually the same situation at quarterback with inexperienced senior Matt Mauck, and he certainly didn't win MVP honors in any bowl game (Remember the Peach bowl beat down of Miami by LSU's Matt Flynn in 2005). However, I think you remember the outcome of that season. With a new offensive coordinator this season, and two new quarterbacks who are more than capable of running with the ball, I think you will see some option this season. This adds another dimension to an already potent offense that led the SEC in points per game last year. Secondly, LSU returns most of the starters from a defense that ranked third in the nation last year. Defensive coordinator Bo Pellini has high hopes for a defense that he says will be more experienced and better this season than last. Not to mention our defensive line will be the deepest and most talented in the nation anchored by all-american DT Glen Dorsey. Thirdly, Early Doucet will have a breakout year being the number one option at WR, and he will do special things as a punt returner this year, evidenced by his 64 yard punt return in the Spring game last week in which the returners were ruled down by touch. And with the number one receiving prospect in the nation, Terrance Tolliver, heading to campus this year along with five star recruit Demetrius Byrd to go along with sophomore returning starter Brandon Lafell, the receivers will be more than capable. Also, the tigers also boast one of the best, if not the best, backfield in the country. Expected starter Keiland Williams will be the starter but watch out for redshirt freshman Richard Murphy. He may be the best running back to enroll at LSU since Kevin Faulk. In conclusion, LSU will compete for the national championship this year. With a much more favorable schedule than last year, the tigers are on a mission this year. GEAUX TIGERS!

Matt Flynn -- Remember the Peach Bowl?
I remember when ESPN was saying that LSU should not show up for the game -- that Miami would push them around at will. How could a mere Matt Flynn as quarterback and a converted fullback in Jacob Hester ever compete with the strength, speed and superior athleticism of Miami!!! Well, then came the game. Hester ran and caught passes. Matt Flynn ran away from the Miami defense showing incredible abilities. Matt hit receivers. Then there was the defense. They did the same thing to Miami that they did to Notre Dame last year in the Super Bowl. I get goose bumps thinking of the total display of ability on both sides of the ball -- speed, commitment, determination and great strength. Now throw in that they honored LSU and its alumni with good sportsmanship and being gentlemen in victory. I could not be prouder of what they have done the last couple of seasons -- especially last year.
Now we have Matt Flynn, Early Doucet and a host of incredible running backs including Jacob Hester to score points and control the ball in 2007. We have an incredible group of athletes coming in to bolster the team -- as Les Miles pointed out, LSU had more 4 Star & 5 Star athletes in this past years recruiting class than anyone else. Now add what should be the most dominating defense in college football -- anchored by Mr. Dorsey. I will never forget how I felt when I heard he was returning -- I felt his presence was more important to this years success than Mr. Russell. I am excited for what is to come -- and it is hard to go much higher when you finish #3 in the country in the past season.
I believe we are in for a treat this coming year -- with Matt Flynn becoming an incredible leader for LSU in the mold of Matt Mauck whose feet, arm and natural leadership abilities brought the 2003 National Championship to LSU. I believe that LSU is powerful enough with players of character, athleticism and commitment to bring LSU a national championship in 2008.

First of all, it's Russell, Bowe, and DaviS. Spelling is your friend!
Secondly, Matt Flynn will have more rushing yards than Hester...as in Jacob Hester...the FULLBACK.
