Nothing's been formally announced, but signs seem to indicate that ballyhooed former Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain is strongly considering transferring to USC.
He visits USC this week and has already been briefed in specifics what his situation will be like.
Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain arrives shortly and there won't be any misunderstandings, especially after he is on the verge of transferring after one season.Doesn't sound like USC is making any promises or guarantees.
"We've laid it out to him," a source said. "Plain and simple. We aren't sugarcoating anything."
With that out of the way, we should soon see whether or not he ends up in Los Angeles. I'm guessing both parties learned a few lessons from his Arkansas experience and the consequences of unfulfilled guarantees. Mustain's former high school and Arkansas teammate Damian Williams also recently transferred to USC.
As a transfer he would have to sit a year before regaining eligibility as a redshirt sophomore in 2008. At that point John David Booty will have graduated and his competition will be redshirt junior Mark Sanchez and this year's recruit Aaron Corp who would be a redshirt freshman or a true sophomore.
Continuing our moment of idle speculation here, this interesting trivia should be noted: if Mustain indeed transfers to USC, the Trojans will have signed each of the last four Parade Magazine All America Players of the Year. They are tailback Joe McKnight (who shares the award this year with Notre Dame-bound quarterback Jimmy Clausen), Mustain, quarterback Mark Sanchez and offensive lineman Jeff Byers.
Mustain famously ran for a touchdown after completing a 41-yard pass against USC in his first collegiate appearance last year.

Mustain looked fairly effective in garbage time against the Trojans last year. Doesn't mean he would make it at SC, yet with his favorite wide out transferring here & 1 more year of maturing, it could be interesting to see what he would bring to the program......Mitch, ever consider being a USC pitcher instead???.......FIGHT ON!

As an Arkansas grad and former resident of the state I find the whole Mustain saga plain sad...To put all the blame on the kid isnt fair..Coach Nut's track record with Qb's isnt good...most recently with the Matt Jones / Tavaris Jackson decision and though Mustain certainly deserves some criticism for his situation there is enough blame to cover everyone involved in this...

Why were there so many Hog fans still at the stadium when their team was down 37 points in the 4th qtr? Were they thinking their golden boy freshman QB could pull off a miracle comeback?

Mustain certainly had every chance to prove himself at Arkansas. His mom can try to blame everything on the program and the coach, but his record stands as it is. He was just as likely to throw and interception as a completed pass. He is the only one that has to take credit for that. His completetion rate was awful. He is lucky that the Hogs focus was on the running game, if not he couldn't even take credit for the wins as a starting freshman.

Bottom line 8-o as a starter when he was benched we went 2 and 4. He was a freshman. For the record how many freshman q/b's have done that in history? The best q/b's have the most interseptions also. Wherever he plays -that college will be blessed. You think Arkansas can't produce? Considered your local Wal-mart or how about your previous 8 year president. When you want to make fun of great talent-ask yourself -what have you done lately that is great. Eating your negative words about Mitch will be Greatness in action very soon. Can't wait --please send me a invitation to watch you in action "Calreb". I think you will see him in Tulsa -to bad poor "Calreb". There-- I am sure they will appreciate Great talent. There is something to be said about those southern q/b's look at your own? and how about Peyton? See you on mitch mustain day! Former Hog Fan.

One final comment about Mitch Mustain. Consider the saying by former Alabama Great coach Bear Bryant who was from "Arkansas"---by the way Calreb. Quote--" Winning isn't everything but it sure the hell beats anything that comes in second". 8-0 baby some just have that winning spirit--Mitch Mustain has that and please keep fueling his fire. Can you feel it?

The commentary about Mustain going to USC seems to miss one important point: Much of the criticism lodged against him - - just read Teresa Prewitt's email to him - - was for allegedly not willing to "compete." Well, what's it say of him if he goes to USC to first have to wait out a year and then compete against at least the heralded Mark Sanchez, and whoever might be brought in this coming year at a pretty successful QB school? It says he is perfectly willing to compete at a place that know what it's doing with talented QBs. He has the patience and maturity to try to get it right with a staff that also has patience, maturity - - and class. What he leaves behind is a coach who on the spur of the moment tossed his redshirt year aside in the throes of panic when being blown out by USC, who then later said he has a "quick hook," who allows fellow coaches to derogatorily call the new OC "High School," who has friends and a wife that circulate emails that made the Chancellor say when he read hem that he wanted to take a shower to remove the stench, and after an 8-0 start with a true freshman QB, pulls him at a game's beginning at the first excuse, and then went 2-4 without him at QB even WITH maybe the best running back tandom in the country. And now he has a new OC, none of the state's top recruits, but he does have one more unused sideline pass to give to someone who will be his shill in tarnishing any student-athlete whom he mistreats. Congratulations Hog Football.

Thanks for clarifing Calreb. Just a sad situation here for Razorback fans. Would any o/c in their right mind stay where the word "delegate" only exist with a preset guota of running plays and a q/b that can't feel relaxed knowing one mistake -no matter the outcome of the game and you are on the bench. How bazaar. Winning does matter-just ask the fans. I bet there will be more drama before next seasons opener. What do you think? The fans deserve better!

Mike: It seems to me out here in San Diego that Nutt
used Malzahn as a gambit to recruit great players to
Arkansas. The fans and players deserve better than that. Hopefully, great coaching at USC and the pro-style offense will provide Williams and Mustain, if he signs with USC,the opportunity apparently denied in Arkansas. Calreb.

They are only young men wanting a positive minded coach to just believe in them-the bottom line is they want the pigskin in the air. Yes it may get intercepted a few times however consider over 4,000 yds and 47 touchdowns in a single season. Mustain did that along with his receivers and Malzahn calling the plays. I would think the coach had confidence in him wouldn't you say. Success breds success. I think there was a conflict of interest here being Heisman focus only. Calreb- the cream of the crop will surface elsewhere in the poles and the mistakes here will reflect in the poles also. Although I could be wrong. What do you think?

Mike. Polls? I follow and assess players. Anyway, I took the chance to review the current video of Mustain's touchdown drive against USC.
The video confirmed what it saw live on TV: a great player succeeding on pure, natural athleticism only. Mustain has the greats. Pete Carroll, Jim Leach or Mike Harbaugh at Stanford who succeeded with a pure athletic QB at the University of San Diego (and without scholarships).Mustain needs to hook up to one of those coaches in my, as always, unhumble opinion. I honestly believe Nutt played a dirt bag on the Springfield athletes with the Malzahn hiring. Undoubtedly. he intended to use a Roevian wedge consisting of the University, state pride, the Razorback team and the greater Fayetteville community to retain them. Sad. Calreb

And then knew by hiring this other coach to move Malzahn to a lesser position would force him out and he would retain Mustain. He tried to hold on to him until momma explained to him how the cow ate the cabbage.. It is sad. Nutt is a great sellsman-no doubt. He would be more successful changing his career. However its about wanting the top spot in the attention department rather than winning--my opinion. Anyway back to where we are comfortable 5 and 4. Calreb- as I am sure you know the difference between a good team and a great team is hiring great coaches across the board not just "The Great ONE" I did that- I called that play. I recruited him- I hired him--I-I-I I lead the band. I don't call the plays "just 25-30 of them per game". (FACT)
