It appears that Auburn finally has its season opening opponent for 2007. The Manhattan (KS) Mercury is reporting tonight that Kansas State has reached an agreement with Auburn to travel to Jordan-Hare Stadium for the Tigers 2007 season opener.
There have been rumors flying around all day on the internet. The Mercury is the first to confirm the story. The opener will be played on September 1st and televised by ESPN. There was no mention of a return trip by Auburn. This has been a sticking point for the Auburn administration in trying to schedule a BCS conference caliber opponent. You would have to assume that they'll be no return trip to Manhattan, Kansas.
This will not be the first time the two schools have met in the season opener. Auburn opened with Kansas State to start the 1979 season. The game was won by the Tigers 26-18 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

It's pathetic that the Auburn AD, Jay Jacobs, has to resort to securing the services of ESPN to broker a deal to find a game. It's also pathetic that Auburn doesn't want to play return games with BCS teams, though we at least are going to West Virginia in 09 (unless Jacobs finds a way to ruin that upcoming series). While I'd much rather have had Texas or Texas A&M for a season opener, at least we have an opener now that is one or two steps above a 1-AA team, which we will probably get stuck with for our last open slot in November now. I wish it were 1983, where we played OOC as follows: Texas, FSU, GaTech, Maryland (with Boomer Esiason), and SoMiss. Now THAT was a non-conference slate to be proud of, Jacobs.

I don't foresee an upset here. Auburn will take them seriously, just like they did WSU last year.

From what I understand, the problem is not that Auburn will not agree to a return game, the problem is that because of the schedule, they cannot make that return game for several years.

Wait a minute!! K State will be a great opener. They have a strong up and coming Soph Qback. He's Big and Tall and has one Hell of an arm (ask Texas 2006)
I agree our AD has avoided the type of matchups that we need to get the votes. How about So. Miss, FSU, Clemson, Iowa, etc.? These are games Auburn should win and boost the voting and respect.
I'll be there Sept. 1 WAR EAGLE! Beat the Wildcats!

Yeah, seriously. Why can't we make good road trips? We would have a great time visiting other big name schools.
Why aren't we playing some big regional OOC teams from the ACC, Big East, Big 10 or Big 12? It's getting a little ridiculous. I know our conference schedules are hard, but that doesn't exactly cut it as an excuse anymore.

Most of the Wildcat fans are happy to have a strong OOC team on the schedule and with the caliber of teams Auburn usually fields this will be a definate plus for our schedule. Only hope we play well and give the Tigers a game and definately looking forward to Auburn making the trip to Manhattan if it works out with AD's, conferences, etc...
