I'm sure their sources are credible, but the story wasn't.So here I am with egg on my face, and well, dammit.
I'm feeling charitable because it's 1)Friday and 2) the Holidays so I'll leave the four letter words and angry letter at home. However, The Birmingham News is totally On Notice. Sit in your corner and think about what you did, fellas, ya goofed. Any further reporting from you on Alabama's coaching will lack truthiness in my book. Argh.
Check out some of these gems:
After Rodriguez's representatives negotiated with Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore for most of today, Rodriguez has told Alabama officials he is ready to take the job offer he received this morning.Yeah, about that.
After two weeks of searching for a replacement for coach Mike Shula, who was fired Nov. 26, the only aspect of the process left is for Rodriguez to tell his team he is leaving his home state and alma mater.Humbug.
Alabama officials are confident Rodriguez will sign his deal Friday morning, sources said, because the two sides have agreed on all economic and non economic issues.
Are you watching this, SID's? Blogs get the bad rap for running false stories, but newspapers and other more established media can just as easily make mistakes. The good blogs want the truth just as much as the newspapers and can fess up when they make errors. It's a mirage that the established media are all that different from us. We're knocking at that door, time to let us in.

Not that you could've been expected to know this, but the B'ham News has been basically worthless throughout this entire search.
Grummell, all that may have happened. Rod may have verbally said everything the News was reporting but nowhere was it reported that he signed the deal. Rod may have just about "signed" it verbally, making everyone believe that from Bama, so as to use all that, including the press reports, for the last minute negotiating power when he was to meet with WVU folks for a counter offer. Rod is a savy genius when it comes to designing his innovative offense on the field. Seems to me he used his savy brain again on "offense" playing the media for every bit of leverage he can get. Agree with him or not, it was a sight to behold.
The Charleston Gazette covered the story and never once, other than to allude to BN's stories, assert that Coach Rod had accepted the job at Alabama, verbally or otherwise - perhaps because
1) He returned or answered their calls (imagine! right to the source!)
2) He never visited Alabama
3) They believed him when he said that he planned to remain at WVU for the rest of his career
Not only has the Bham News been worthless, but Scarbinski has been especially horrible. First he reports that, according to good sources, Shula will be retained & his staff will stay intact. This was the day before Thanksgiving I think. Then, if memory serves, he reported that Spurrier & then Saban were locks.
The only candidate now should be David Cutcliffe! He's the only fit for fans, the University, hey even Mal!!, he's a "Bear" player, an alum of Bama, and he's an offensive guru, what more can they ask for?
may i add we dont want david cutcliffe,we need to keep joe kines for at lease 2 years and see what he can do,he is from old school and will make a good coach
and lee please, you dont understand anything about football so you need to shut up
Rich never agreed to any deal with bama. The psuedo journalists trying to cover their butts claim he had agreed to a deal Friday morning. Dave Hickman, a Charleston reporter spoke to Rich at 12:30am Friday and Rich confirmed no deal was done. Dave uses accurate sources, shame on the Bama press for creating this soap. Now you need a new coach and real journalist.
alabama's glory days are over.it's acoaching graveyard.you have to win 10 games ayear and beat auburn 9 times out of 10 so why would any name coach go there?
Jake,
We all think alot (maybe love) of Joe Kines but...we already have a poor rep because of the high turn over at head coach.
Why put JK in the position and then start the head coach search again in two years or so.
What would the recruits think.
I am so tired of listening to the head coach talk...it gives me a headache. I am waiting for someone to say he wants to be the next head coach. Then I'll listen.
How many times does Saban have to sat he is not interested. (Of course if the Fins show him the door I am sure its nice to know you have a $ 2,000,000.00 + job to fall back on.)
We have one one national championship in the last 26 years. The second longest drought in the schools history. 14 years since our last.(1941-1961 is the longest. The 1961 team may be the most dominate we have ever fielded. Look at the stats.)
Anyway if are are to continue the tradition lets move forward.
If we are honest with ourselves Bobby Bowden (Who could have been Bama's coach) and Florida State has set a better pace since 1980. Of course they have had one coach and one direction. Not a losing season in 30 years. Two national championships and 5 "other national" championships. And don't say anything about "other" national championship unless you review some of Bama's early ones we claim in the 12.
I wish Mal lots of luck. If it is Saban I won't be shocked. He has not been real successful in the NFL. Kinda of reminds me of Spurrier and the Skins. The Fins are what? 6-10 or 6-9.
You fire a 6-6 coach for a 6-10 coach. MMMMMM!!!
Saban didn't win anything at Michigan State or Miami! How many big ten titles does he have ?
No one cares about Alabama football. They suck and always will suck. The fans are all hillbillys.
