Mildly disappointed that Mike Leach (hyyyyarrr!) isn't the new coach of the rootin-est, tootin-est, most pirate-y program in all the land, but at least that embarassing "5" next to "Black Head Coaches in D-IA Football" is now a slightly-but-not-much-less embarassing "6": 'Canes defensive coordinator Randy Shannon is the pick. This is slightly unfortunate for bloggers, as the tendency of teams to grab current head coaches to fill their current vacancies was great posting fodder. Go into "Who's the next head coach at NC State?", carefully scrub all "Wolfpack" references and replace them with "Eagles" references -- check that subject-verb agreement -- and voila! Material!
Anyway, this is a good pick for Miami for a multitude of reasons. Shannon's young (40) and dynamic, familiar with the program (he was a player there and has been coaching at Miami since '98) and brings with him a surge of good PR that the Miami program needs. Most importantly, his defenses have remained consistently wicked throughout Miami's gradual Uncle-Fester-guided decline. Even this year, Miami was fifth in total defense.

I am delighted with the choice of the new University of Miami coach because my first instinctive feeling was "Oh Great what a nice transition for someone who knows the team and who the team knows." I've been an avid Miami Fan for 30 years. My husband's last night on earth he stayed alive to watch Miami beat Boston Collage on Halloween which was on a Saturday night in 1998. I've watched nearly every game since.
I loved Larry Coker and I know I will love Randy and be cheering him and the team on.
The media coverage of some new head coach moving in and the disruptions involved would distract the team from becoming the best they can be to prove the right choice was made.
I can tell by looking at his photo that he is going to be a great coach. He knows them and he already knows what needs to be done from the inside out rather than having someone coming in from the outside.
GREAT CHOICE!!!
As a Rutgers alumnus, But having lived in South Florida for 45 years, I have mixedfeelings. Greg Shiano would have been a better choice for miami, but it would have been disasterous for Rutgers. I want to see BOTH teams do well. Since Shiano decided to stay at Rutgers, Shanno is the next best choice. Both teams will benefit.
Fantastic choice!!! As both an alumnus and avid UM fan, I know Randy Shannon is the best choice. Someone who was part of the winning tradition from day one and restoring the "U" to its championship glory. He was the best coach qualified becuase the defenses he established have been rock solid through the turbulence of UM's football program. However, I hope he can get back a few of those young men who recanted on their committments to the university. In addition, pick a great offensive coordinator to get the offense pumping. Randy might want to give old "Chud" Rod Chudsinski a call about coming back down to raise some dust in the ACC and show everyone what the "U" is all about.
I think this was an outstanding hire for the 'Canes! I'm excited and looking forward to what coach Shannon can do as a head coach. I also have a strong disire for him to do EXTREAMLY well concidering the standards and expectations at the "U" are as high as any school in the country. I don't want to see him let go after a bad season (9-3 and you're the second comming of Larry Coker)Honestly, I was hoping he'd stay on DC and ride that wave out at the "U". But I'm glad he stepped up and took the challenge of bringing us back up to speed. I keep telling my friends, who here in North Florida are mostly Gator or Seminole fans....."We're still Miami"! I'm very proud of the job coach Coker did for us. He was a great coach, just not for the 'Canes. I wish him luck to where his oppertunities afford him. And finally, can we please get an OC who can put more than 21 points on the board?
I for one think that it is great that the U picked Randy Shannon for the coach. I have been a very avid fan sense the early fifties. They have had their ups and downs. But more ups then down. I personally think he will put the swagger back into their playing. My idea of swagger is not getting drunk and getting caught by the law. It is what you do on the field. Not how well you can fight. Take it out on the opposing team. I for one am looking to the next season. I loved coach Cooker, but he was not the one to lead this team into the future. Go Coach Shannon. Congradulations Mr, Dee
