Spurrier to 'Bama Rumor Grows Legs

Two radio outlets are reporting tonight that Alabama has, in fact, made Steve Spurrier an offer and the ball is in his court. The details are similar to the ones I mentioned earlier.

The offer is allegedly worth $3.3 million a year for seven years, plus a $5 million signing bonus. He'll have free reign (and a blank check) to pick his assistants and will answer directly to President Witt. Some reports say that he'll have a chance to take the Athletic Director spot when he retires from coaching.

WFSA out of Montgomery reported that the South Carolina Athletic Director had "no comment" about whether or not Alabama AD Mal Moore had asked permission to speak with Spurrier. Some say that an announcement could be made within 24 hours.

While this certain looks good for the Tide, you can never assume that Mal Moore isn't incompetent enough to offer a coach who isn't interested.

UPDATE: Word from Alabama is that Rick Karle on Fox 6 in Birmingham reported that Mal Moore has earned an audience with Spurrier who is going to "hear him out." It was broadcast, but I have not been able to find a link confirming it (aside from a dozen people saying they saw it on TV, too).

UPDATE (11/30, 10:20am): In addition to the links in the comments, the Huntsville Times is reporting that an official source has confirmed that AD Moore has requested permission to speak with spurrier. Fox 6 out of Birmingham reported again today that Spurrier will be meeting with Moore. There are also reports that SC has entered talk with Spurrier to renegotiate his contract, so this could all just be a ploy to get more money out of SC's Athletic Department. I don't know if I believe that, but I'm still not convinced that Spurrier to 'Bama is a likely scenario. These are just the latest rumors and reports.

UPDATE (11/30, 8:11pm): As is mentioned farther down in the comments, and in Today's coaching forecast, Spurrier told his players that he's not going anywhere. Yet, despite the rumors he has yet to make the same plain statement to the media... if you're scoring at home, take the odds of a Spurrier-to-Bama down a peg... but the show is not over until he tells us he turned down a deal or expressly says that he's not going to Alabama.
