No, that's not a snarky headline. It's straight up. Bowden was asked why things didn't work out with his son Jeff -- you know, other than that whole driving-the-program-into-the-ground thing; his response:"Because you all ignited it," he said to a small room of reporters. "You listen to eBay and e-mail and all that junk, and you all kept writing about it and that fans it and makes it grow and grow, and it becomes a cancer. That's why."As the Dude might say: Bobby Bowden, obviously you're not a golfer. Darn kids with the hippin' and the hoppin' and all those tubes with the eBay and the e-mail and the e-vil. For the record, Florida State was 59th in total offense a year ago and is 70th this year with Florida's snarling monstrosity yet to come, and that's with games against mighty Troy State and Rice on the schedule. But this post is less about the validity of internet criticism of Jeff (complete and total) and more about Bobby's belief that EBay had something to do with it (wacky!).

Wow Ed Slawinski (comment #3), I think you are generalizing in a massively unfair way. First of all, from scools as far flung as Wake Forest, to Minnesota, Iowa State and even USC, or Wash St., one can find year in and year out, NUMEROUS Florida born and bred players. Coaches from EVERY conference blanket recruit in FL. The 3 main schools in FL. can only take so many, and have the same guessing and hoping process to go through as everyone else (think Ohio State and Maurice Clarett). In the old days, states like PA and OH had a monopoly on the production of future stars, Florida has lead the way for many years, and populates many different schools' rosters. While Miami, Fla St., and Fl. were all dominating during the late 80's and 90's year in and year out, and by and large still today, where was USC or even Ohio State? And all that talk about the Big 10 is a bunch of mularkey. Northwestern lost to UNH this year and still has big 10 wins! The FACT is for several years (in recent decades) Ohio State or USC couldn't stay on the field with most Florida teams so there's no credible way to claim that Florida football is all hype unless your audience is ridiculously biased and totally ignorant. Moreover, your comment smacks of racism. Yet, I AM NOT SAYING YOU are racist. I know you are referring to the average skill player (WR,RB,CB) who tends to get attention and make flashy plays, who also tends to be Black and not usually well-spoken -- something that is generally endemic within the culture and more habitual rather than an accurate reflection of an actual inability to speak well or function well as a student. Many are simply conditioned to speak a certain way by virtue of their communal influences and peer pressures - no difference from a bright and/or probably White Brooklynite who may be intelligent and yet speaks with speech peppered with "dems and doze and youze guyz" and all sorts of other Joey Buttafucco/Sopranos sounding speech patterns. Patrick Ewing graduated high school on Cambridge, MA., with a 200 on his verbal score! You get that incidenatlly for writing your name. He was unintelligible and probably, at least functionally, illiterate. However, he attended GEORGETOWN on a full scholarship and served the school well for four years, and in turn educated himself and graduated successfully. He later became the Union Rep for the NBA players and a well spoken individual. Proving that the system can work VERY well. On the other hand, LeBron James never attended college, and acquits himself quite nicely in interviews.

Uh, Jamie, you apparently have a very short memory. Do you remember what happened in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl when your mighty Gators faced one of those little 'ol teams from up North?
Now, I'm no football historian, but I seem to remember something like Nebraska 62, Florida 24. Again, I could be wrong.

Dear Coach,
You have more than paid your dues and brought honor
to your school. The greatest mistake is staying too
long. Bret Farve is a good example. Be gracious, no

Hey Husker fan. How many times has FSU and UM ruined your national title hopes in either the Orange,Fiesta,or Rose Bowl? A couple were BLOWOUTS if my memory serves me correctly. I'll give ya credit though, that Husker team that destroyed da Gators was UNSTOPABLE! NOBODY could have beat them that day. Every team takes an arse whoopin sooner or later.

Nebraska fan, bad example using your 1996 team, given that Frazier was from the Tampa Bay area and Phillips and many others were from Compton. Sure, "Nebraska" had a great team that year.

Dear Coach,
We love you...you are fabulous...However, knowing you are the same age as my uncle (who played football under you at Howard College)and close in age to my dad (who also knew you at Howard)...RETIRE. Go golfing, see the grandkids (great-grandkids), travel the world, enjoy your money. It is time, unless you plan to be Shembechler and die before a big game or Joe Pa and be taken out on the sidelines...Even Bear retired.

As my late great cousin would say "WHEN MY TEAM LOOSES, IT'S MY FAULT." And if I remember correctly, he stepped down, when he knew it was time. He fired people when he knew it was time, and he motivated people when he knew motivation was the only way to get the job done. He created warriors, with the hearts of lions, he believed "that any man's finest hour-his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear, is that moment when he has to work his heart out in a good cause and he's exhausted on the field of battle-victorious." Not looking for excuses such as e-bay,e-mail etc.

I'd put a BUY IT NOW of 50 cents on Bobby Bowden. All the classy football players who want a real education and want to grow up real men are heading up to New Jersey to play for Greg Schiano and Rutgers. The Univeristy of South Florida (USF) will be the next football "power" in the state of Florida.

It's funny how when your down and out you throw away a coach, but not when your winning. I guess it shouldn't suprise anyone since we are a throw away society. But someone did fail to mention that we are playing a majority of freshmen out there...kids who just got out of high school not seniors who have been playing for 4 or 5 years. The Seminoles have been plagued with injury this year. I think Bobby is right...the media has caused Jeff's departure. Ok, so we can concede that he is a gentleman who doesn't know the difference between ebay and email...who cares, he knows football!

Dad,
I wouldn't have resigned if you let me be the OC the way that I wanted to. You kept making me play Drew when you know that Xavier is the better QB and better option...So yes, I'm sorry, but I took the money and ran.
Too much stress taking all the blame for you when you wont let the offense outta your sight, daggummit.
You still won't play Xavier even after he outshines Drew on a consistent basis...I can't keep doing this week after week, taking the critics for something I really don't deserve..
I love you, Dad, but I had to do it...
