Several sources close to the UNC coaching search have reported that Butch Davis has signed a contract to become the next head coach at the University of North Carolina.According to the sources, the only detail remaining to be worked out is when UNC will make an official announcement.
The timing of the announcement is a sticky issue since current coach John Bunting remains at the helm of the UNC program through the end of the season.
More details to come as they are
Updates:
The Winston-Salem Journal is now reporting this same information.
Inside Carolina has also gone public with the story.

Will believe it when I hear an official announcement from the University. UNC and AD Dick Baddour have bungled more than one critical hire. Don't understand why John Bunting's current situation dictates when an announcment should be made. If Baddour and UNC are concerned about hurting Bunting's feelings, then his ego is too fragile to have ever been a head coach of a Division I-A program. And, if Bunting is the 'class act' that all of his apologists make him out to be, he would want what's best for UNC and the Heels' football program - and that's making the announcement right away to re-energize the program and lock down the incoming recruiting class.

Bunting's "current situation" is that he's presently the coach and if you're going to be professional about announcing the hire of a new coach you give the news to the present coach FIRST and dont have him hear it first in the news. Yes they botched the beamer situation which is PRECISELY the reason to be beyond reproach this time.

It's a done deal. The $'s are going to stun some folks, but UNC is definitely looking to become a big-time football program once again.

I hope this is true. Other than ECU, the best school in the state, I'd rather see UNC ahead of NC State, Duke or Wake. (My UNC nephew is twisting my arm to say this). If UNC pulls this off, fans should tell DB they are sorry for doubting him. NOT....

This hire, if it happens, was driven by UNC's Board of Trustees - not Baddour. They didn't want to witness another Donnan/Torbush/Donnan again/no, Torbush again/Beamer/Bunting fiasco. With Butch Davis and Roy Williams in place as the heads of the two revenue sports in Chapel Hill, NOW would be a good time for Baddour to retire and name Matt Kupec as his replacement.

Since 1996 and 1997 - Mack Brown's last two years in Chapel Hill (finished both years ranked in the Top 10, '97 in the top 5). Plus, check out the number of NFL players that Brown recruited to Chapel Hill and eventually sent to the NFL.

The hey day was mack brown could beat everyone but Floriday State and would end up in the gator Bowl every year with a 10-1 record.the icing came when Mack Brown had 40,000 attendance the final game of the year and realized that a 4-7 texas team at a football school was better than a 10-1 at a basketball school.look at the results at Texas

Mack Brown never did make UNC a big time program. That's why he left UNC because he knew he'd have to leave that Mickey Mouse school and go to a real football school like Texas to contend for a BCS.

Texas is the reigning National Champion, they have lost only one game , to the # 1 ranked team. They should be ranked #2 until some team can prove otherwise. Hook em horns....

Be afraid, be VERY afraid. Da Browns are still suffering because of his poor draft choices and inability to coach in the big leagues while at the help. Thought UNC had much better class then to rely on selecting someone with the worst coaching performances by a college turned pro cooach. A new low in the making.

Welcome to the new "U." Miami is still suffering from the Butch Davis "thUg" era. I say bring him on and let him trash this school the same way he did UM and I am a UNC Alumni. School sucked anyway...no real fan base, dubbing in fan noise, etc....no wonder people hated us.

Good luck with that. As a die hard Browns fan I feel sorry for any tradition that USED to be UNC. Be prepared for fill in the blank up the middle and a 2 yard screen on 3rd and 14 along with half your team being injured. If you're lucky he will just set your football program back to the stone age and his piss poor play calling and bad attitude won't carry over to the Basketball program. God help UNC.

Clueless Dickey stikes again! I'm a UNC alum..but, I'm sorry. DB needs to get into politics or something and leave the athletic dept. to someone who knows what they're doing. I mean why would Butch Davis want to come to UNC? And if he does come, how long do
you think he'll stay before moving on to a real football school?

Butch Davis should hold out and sign a mutli million dollar package to go back to the University of Miami
where he can restore the tradition at MIAMI once again. Remeber Coker inherited that team that went 12-0 and the one that went 12-1 from Davis..those were his recruits, dorsey mcgahee portis taylor reed moss
johnson etc......Davis is a master recruiter at the college level...
