Defensive Backs - C+

Same song, different verse? Just like the Cowboy LBs, the defensive backfield is very young and a little green but has experienced an obvious talent upgrade. Unlike the Mighty Mites or Stingy Smurfs of the Bill Clay defensive era, the new Cowboy secondary has some size.

Gone are the days of 5-foot something corners! Instead, the Cowboys have recruited some size in CBs VanZant, Lacey, and Cox among others. The problem now is getting these guys some meaningful PT. Woods and Sexton have brought some size and attitude to the safety position. In fact, Woods and Sexton are currently leading the team in tackles.

One bright spot for the Cowboy secondary is they have recorded 4 interceptions through the first four games of the 2006 season compared to 5 for all of the 2005 season.

The bad news is the Cowboy secondary was abused by the Cougar pass-happy offense. The credit for the Houston Affair may be spread among virtually the entire Cowboy squad, but the secondary gave up 21 for 28 passing and 313 yards to a Conference USA team. That makes me a little nervous with TTU and NU remaining on the schedule.

This Cowboy secondary will be good, but it's going to take time. Much more time.
