Great googly moogly: Northern Colorado backup punter Mitch Cozad was arrested yesterday for stabbing the starter in his kicking leg. This is like Tonya Harding except way, way crazier. Let's review: Harding was going for Olympic gold and the countless endorsement deals, unflattering SNL sketches, and twenty-dollar autographs that would be the spoils of said victory. Cozad wants to punt. For a I-AA team. That just lost to Portland State.45-3.
Wow.
The sad part (well, the sad part other than "someone got stabbed") is that the starter was averaging only 37.6 yards per kick. Mitch, if you can't beat that straight up maybe you should get a hobby or something. You're no Orin Incandenza.
Cozad now joins the exclusive fraternity of People Definitely Crazier Than Tonya Harding. As reminder, the list:
- Cozad
- Tom Cruise
- Brian Kelly
- Anyone who fronts with Chuck Norris.

Considering high school cheerleaders in Texas were offing each other for the #1 slot, this guy's case is just a kick in the pants

I think it is really a sad day when someone is not confident enough with their ability to do things the right way. It's kinda like I've always tried to live by, if I did not earn it I don't want it. He needs to be kicked off the team permanently and never alowed to return to any college or NFL sport again. I am a VT fan and Marcus Vick got in more trouble by stepping on someones leg(which he should have).

When it comes to football, nothing surprises me anymore. It's become a totally sick and disgusting sport attracting the dregs of society as players. Cozad should be expelled from Northern Colorado, banned from ever playing again at any level, and serve a good long time in prison.

Apparently this guy Covad was the odd man out at Wyoming, as well. Of course, as he describes the situation, it wasn't his fault.
From Wyoming sport's blog:
Even in the calm before the media day storm, we’ve got some news to report. Mitch Cozad, a walk-on punter from Wheatland, has left the team to play at Northern Colorado. After two-plus years with the Cowboys, Mitch felt he wasn’t moving closer to getting a scholarship, so he sent out his tape this spring and got a few bites. Montana offered a partial scholarship, and Cozad could have roomed with fellow former Wyoming player Keith Brauneis in Missoula. But in the end, he opted for the full scholarship at UNC.
Mitch makes at least three Wyoming-native walk-ons who have left the program in the last year, including Lander-born Brauneis and Natrona County graduate Scott Cogdill. When I talked to Mitch today, he sounded almost exactly like Brauneis did just before he left the program. Not really angry, just…frustrated.
“There’s just some situations, political situations, that are tough to deal with,” Cozad said. “Coming from what state, what school did you play for, who did you play against, stuff like that. It’s tough sometimes.”

Are you people stupid? Do you really think that he Cozad would still be playing after doing something like that? I work for the football team, and just letting you all know, he's not playing on the team anymore.

This is a very, very sad story. As the mother of a kicker in a 1AA school, I understand the competition that's involved. Healthy competition can bring out the best in a player; I think this is what coaches count on. I cannot imagine a player ever wanting to hurt another to get a starting position. I feel for both sets of parents; they must be devastated.

Amanda, it sounds like he was doing the team a favor. 37 yard kicks? Good grief. Frodo from Lord of the Rings could kick farther than that with his little midget legs, and he's not even real.

Um, Amanda, we know. I think they were being facetious. It is a literary device. Perhaps they will introduce it to you during your sophmore year.
